Tips for Unique Stables and Barns for Your Horses

A lot of the time your stables are going to be built according to a particular style or pattern. This definitely has advantages. It means several people can use your stables and already have an idea of how everything is laid out and arrayed. However building a unique stables for your horse not only allows you to invest yourself more into the building, but also add new features and facilities that standard designs may not allow for. So here are a handful of tips you can use to help make your stables more unique to you and your horses.

Tips for Unique Stables and Barns for Your HorsesStorage

Keep your storage in the middle of the barn for objects such as feed, blankets, hay and riding equipment. Doing this allows you to reduce the amount of time it takes for people to go from individual stalls to storage, which in general makes things a lot more convenient and efficient. If you’re lucky to have a particularly large set of stables, you may even want to establish a storage area in the dead centre of the stables itself, with the stables arrayed around it.

For increased efficiency, and to truly give yourself unique stables, you can also have the storage that is accessibly from all sides. Doing so also has the advantage of reducing the temptation to leave supplies to fester at the back, using only what can be immediately accessed from the front. This not only makes your storage more time and space efficient, but also increases cost efficiency.

Another feature that can help improve your unique stables is to install a means of storing jumping poles, namely by nailing gutter brackets to the side of the wall. You can store your poles on those, keeping them in one place and off the floor.

Finally you can also store feed in plastic industrial barrels. Usually feed comes in large sacks that, while convenient to transport, do little to protect the feed from vermin or the elements. Storing it within plastic barrels will not only keep the feed in one place, but also help preserve them for longer than can be attained by feed sacks. Just make sure the barrels are cleaned out first, so as to keep them hygienic.

Stalls

Remember that your stalls are where your horses will be any time they’re not in the field, as such they should be designed for their comfort. Make sure they’re bright, airy and open, with good visibility of the surrounding stable. Horses are herd animals, and being to see horses in other stalls can help keep them contented.

There may be a temptation to make your stalls larger than usual. Try to keep control of this urge, as the larger the stall is, the more bedding you will need and the more cleaning it will need too. In general your horse only really needs enough room to move around and lay down comfortably. Anymore is simply inefficient.

For added safety, you may wish to round down the corners of any out jutting wooden frames or struts. This will stop your horses injuring themselves as they brush against them during work.

Flooring

There’s no real advantage to any particular flooring material, and each one has its own advantages and disadvantages to recommend it. In general, though, you should avoid concrete as these will injure your horses’ legs as they walk across it. Good choices are popcorn asphalt, or interlocking rubber bricks.

Carriage House Garages

In the middle of the 1800s (19th Century), the population in Britain turned a new corner in its history. For the first time in its history, more people in Britain were living in the new cities than there were living outside the cities (according to the 1851 countrywide census). A similar landmark moment appeared in 2007, when, globally, it became apparent that there were more people living in the world’s cities that there were living outside of them in rural communities.

Carriage House Garages
This may seem insignificant, but the growth of cities across the world has created a massive shift in the way people live and interact with each other. One of factors affecting the change is the fact that people in cities live so close to each other. Originally, the first cities comprised of over-sized towns, with row upon row of terraced houses being built. Nowadays however, architects are turning to the sky for space when they build houses; the newest cities around the world are being built with skyscrapers that are mostly living accommodation. The benefit of this is that you can more people living in a very small ground area, but it still has negative implications. For example, one implication that seems to go unnoticed frequently is the inability to have a garage for most people nowadays. Many people no longer have the space to park their car on the road, let alone in a part of their own home!

Perhaps more surprisingly, some people even waste their garages, turning them into a dumping ground for unwanted items. Treasure it, fewer people are having garages than ever! However, if you’re looking to give your garage a redesign, why not turn to John William Stables, a timber construction specialist that can construct a new garage built almost entirely from high quality timber.

The carriage housegarages that they offer are especially awesome, as they encompass a traditional carriage house with a garage. The result of this is a space large enough to park a car in, but with one end opened up, so that the car is still visible and accessible, but also protected from the elements. The carriage house garage you buy can be built to one of their own carriage house garage ranges, or to one of your own designs, giving you the opportunity to create your own personal garage that is unique to yourself.

In their carriage house garage range, there are two categories. The Ideal category range covers the most popular timber buildings, designed with attractive, practical and robust features. The elite categoryrange is a much more prestigious range, and is concerned with the aesthetics of a beautiful timber framed building too.

Using horses as part of Emotional Therapy Programmes

Horses were originally seen as working animals, used in transportation and on the likes of farms. Given a horses size, strength and intelligence they were heavily relied upon to pull ploughs for field work and carriages for those wealthy enough to have the luxury of such transportation. Over the years, horses have been continually used as ‘working’ animals including during the war and although many no longer work in labour intensive jobs, they still have a vital role to play in some working environments – specifically horse therapy.

Using horses as part of Emotional Therapy Programmes
Horse therapy or equine assisted therapy can be used as part of a therapy treatment to help those with learning disabilities, behavioural difficulties, mental health issues and as part of rehabilitation after a severe injury. According to Equine Psychotherapy, the treatment can be used to promote emotional growth. In its basic stages, the therapy teaches how to move a horse in a calm and gentle manner as well as tacking a horse and feeding or grooming them. Little work is usually emphasised on actually riding the animal. There has been much evidence to support the benefits of equine therapy including building confidence, trust and improving social skills as well as improving communication skills and self-acceptance. Building a relationship with a horse is seen as a ‘healing process’ and with that brings great opportunities to better a person’s outlook.

As said horses are seen to be very therapeutic animals and with that have many positive effects on those who partake in such programmes. These animals are used because of their emotional intelligence. They too fear, act on instincts, change their moods and show very definite personality traits. With these characteristics, horses are able to show kindness and love as well as show fear or uncertainty in situations that they do not like. It is these changing emotions that can allow participants of such therapy treatments the chance to better understand emotional needs and how to act in specific situations.

This type of therapy has grown in interest in recent years and has picked up high acclaim for the positive effects that it can have on a person’s life. As part of the therapy, the animals need to be looked after including grooming and feeding as well as the everyday chores required when looking after a horse. American barn units could help to offer a safe environment for such interactions. These outbuildings are equipped with stable areas as well as additional space for grooming and storage space for tack and feed. American barns may help in such therapy treatments by giving a familiar and calming environment for the animal whilst offering the best facilities to participants for the best possible outcome.

Protective Carriage Garages Can Help Prolong Lifespan

Whether you run a small horse-drawn carriage business for tourism or special occasions, or else maintain a carriage for historical interest, for racing or even as an eccentric turn of personality, you need to protect your vehicle. Perhaps even more so than a car, a carriage is susceptible to the elements and other external hazards. As such, you should consider constructing or converting a carriage garage. Such structures help protect your carriages and keep them functional for longer. Fortunately enough for you there are a plethora of places from which you can acquire such a structure.

The problem with carriages can be found in a number of things. Most principally, they tend to be made of wood, leather and other organic materials. This makes them very vulnerable to moisture, and as such they must be stored somewhere dry if they are to last for more than a few years. The metal components for the wheels, steering mechanism and suspension can also be highly susceptible to damp, and rust will destroy a carriage just as readily as rot. As such, you must ensure that your carriage garage is dry and warm, so that your carriage can be stored safely for long periods of time.

If you’re maintaining an original antique, then the need for a dry, warm storage area is especially important. Old, dry wood is particularly sensitive to environmental changes. After a certain period, it will need to be carefully maintained.

Carriage garages can also provide a place for you to store all the necessary parts for maintaining and running a carriage, from spare wheels to supplies for cleaning the upholstery. This cuts down on the amount of storage space you need to make elsewhere, and improves the efficiency of keeping the carriage. If you already have a stables for housing the draft animals, a wooden carriage stable can be constructed to be attached to the stables themselves. This further improves the efficiency of the stables and garage both. Wooden carriage garages also have an advantage in that they can easily be expanded and renovated, as the walls are more easily removed. Such materials also tend to be lighter and cheaper, as well as easier to build in general.

There’s also an advantage behind wooden carriage garages that can be found in the overall aesthetic. Particularly for carriages that are modelled on historical makes -- or are historical themselves -- wooden environs can help compliment this history more readily. Many wooden storage buildings can be tailor made to specific eras and architecture, allowing for greater architectural freedom.

Equestrian Stables for your Horses

An equestrian stable is usually a mainly wooden barn or building where horses can be kept. Instead of leaving the horses outside in the fields to graze and sleep overnight, the majority of horses (especially those kept as pets or for racing) are kept inside an equestrian stables, where it is much easier to groom, feed and shelter the horses.

Equestrian Stables for your Horses
The United Kingdom has had a long lasting heritage of using horses over a huge range of jobs for such a long period of time, from use in labour (like farming, pulling carriages and riding into wars) to recreational use (for example, racing and show jumping), which means that right across the country equestrian stables have played a part in helping to continue the tradition of horse riding, with many still surviving today.

However, within the last century or so, the number of horses in use across the country has significantly reduced as better solutions for transport, farming and other labour have come around. Horses are no longer needed to pull carts and traps, and their use in farming has also shrunk, with motorised ploughs and other machinery having been invented. This has meant that the number of equestrian stables in the UK has also decreased, and their purpose has also changed. With the majority of stables in the past being used for horses doing manual labour, they were often full with horses, and community stables would spring up, providing work, like cleaning and feeding the horses.

Nowadays, however, it is more common for people to buy an equestrian stables for their own horses, which only they can use. These are usually built on their own land, with easy access for the horses to get there. Jon William Stables can provide you with many types and sizes of equestrian stables for providing shelter for your horses.

Horse Stables in the UK

A Horse Stable is a place in which horses are usually kept. In the instances where peoples horses are not left in fields to graze all day, most horses are kept overnight and during a lot of the day in stables.  Due to the United Kingdom’s long-lasting heritage of using horses for many jobs over thousands of years, whether they be for recreational use or labour, dotted all around the country there are thousands of horse stables.

Unfortunately due to the decrease in demand for horses over the last century, with the invention of the motorcar and other engine-powered machines, the need for horses in Britain has changed hugely. Horse Stables in the UK no longer serve so many horses that are used for labour work, such as pulling carts and traps, or carrying out work in farms, and as a result, the main usage for horse stables has changed.

In the past, many horse stables were owned by a single wealthy family, whose horses were all kept in the stables where they were fed, groomed and exercised. This meant that a large number of the horse stables at the time were situated within large estates or even mansions, with lots of land surrounding the stables where the horses could be ridden.

More recently, most stables have still been privately owned, but they’re owned by businesses, and the majority of them serve horses for recreational use from many different customers. The stables no longer serve just one family, and instead may serve several to a couple of dozen families, depending on the stables’ size.

Currently, the use of large stables is declining; those people with horses are often opting now to fit their own small stables into the field they keep their horse, which seems to suggest that the age of the large public horse stables in the UK is coming to an end.

If you would like to obtain a horse stables for your own horse, contact Jon William Stables, who can supply horse stables of many different kinds to you, depending on your needs.

Help prevent dehydration with field shelters

Dehydration is the loss of water and salts from the body which are essential for the body to function properly. Dehydration happens when not enough fluids are taken in, in comparison to those which are lost. This could be through excessive sweating, participating in strenuous exercise and even from being unwell. Staying outside in the sun for prolonged periods of time is also a prominent cause of dehydration. However, it is not only humans that suffer from dehydration as many animals can also effect as well.

As humans, we are usually able to manage our hydration levels by drinking when thirsty and staying out of sun when it is hot. Our bodies also function very well in cooling us down – or there are many mechanical aids including air conditioners and fans to give our bodies that helping hand. For horses it is not as simple.

Horses are large animals that cannot control their own body temperature as well as a human, partially due to the high proportion of heat produced from large muscles in the body when performing any physical exercise. The one way that horses are able to reduce their overall body temperature is through sweating. This process is usually excessive – especially during strenuous exercise – meaning that far more water and salts are lost than what the horse will take in. This is heightened in hot and humid conditions. By keeping your animal cooler, with round the clock access to shade, the need to sweat would be reduced, making it far less likely for the animal to become dehydrated.

Fieldshelters could help to provide shade in paddocks during the warmer summer months. These shelters can usually be designed specific to your requirements, with options for large overhanging canopies and multiple windows for improved ventilation. Some companies offer mobile field shelters, making them easy to reposition, depending on the suns direction into the field, to give optimum shade throughout the day.

If you are worried about dehydration in your equestrian animal during the upcoming British summer and would like to find out a little more information on field shelters, please visit the website of JonWilliam Stables to view the wide range of products available. Alternatively, if you would like to speak with a member of the team to discuss your bespoke requirements, please call 01380 850 965 where an experienced team member will be more than happy to help.

Things to consider when buying a Timber Stable

The use of timber as a building material in construction has been momentous. Timber is an easy material to work with as it can be shaped specifically into its desired use and offers strength and longevity. Unfortunately, timber is also extremely attractive to various insects and also fungal infestation which can weaken its structure – making for a less than solid build.

Wood boring insects can seriously damage wood structures as they eat their way through, literally tunnelling through the very core structure of the timber. Once inside adults will lay their eggs which, once hatched, continue to eat through the material as they develop. Once fully mature, these beetles then repeat the process; making for easily infested wood. Most timber boring insects prefer damp wood conditions and so any external timber structures are more prone to an ‘attack’.

The other major destroyer of timber is fungal decay; or more specifically dry rot and wet rot. This decay is, again, able to grow better in damp conditions. These fungal infestations can cause the timber to split and often shrink making any structure extremely weak. If undetected, fungal rot can causes masses of structural damage that, at worst, could result in a collapsed structure.

If opting for timber as a building material it is important to take every precaution to prevent such destructive infestations occurring – particularly if using it externally where it is more prone to damp conditions. If you are looking at a timber stable structure, you should opt for a product that uses pre-treated timber. Timber stables, such as those sold by Jon Williams Stables, are usually protected against both insect and fungal decay with a high pressure treatment called tantalising. This treatment preserved the timber making it less likely to be attacked by such intrusive destroyers.

If you are looking for a new timber stable and want to be assured that it will withstand against possible decay and insect infestation, please speak to a member of the Jon Williams Stable team by calling 01380 850 965 to find out more about their timber treatments. Alternatively, please visit the company’s website to view a wide range of timber stables that use tantalised timber as standard to add to the longevity of your structure.

Timber Stable Construction and Maintenance

Getting a suitable timber stable built to shelter your horse or pony is something you want to do quickly and efficiently. Fortunately this is what this guide hopes to give you a hand with with a series of basic steps for you to follow.

Step 1) Survey the Ground
Timber Stable
The first step is to survey the ground that the stable is to be built on. Ideally the ground should be soft enough that preparing foundations does not take longer than it needs to. At the same time, it should also not be so soft that it could sink or list after construction. The grounds immediately outside and within the timber stable should also be relatively flat and even, to make movement easier for your horses.

Take a look at surrounding plants too. Scour the ground of any weeds that may be harmful to your horses and remove them thoroughly with weed killer. This will help ensure that the stable and the surrounding area are safe places for your horses and won't cause them any unnecessary harm.

Step 2) Plan Your Timber Stable’s Layout
The function and capacity of your stables are two important things to consider. A simple shelter to keep your horses out of the wind and rain while out in the paddock to graze and stretch their legs will not be the same as a stables intended for them to sleep overnight in.

The former can literally just be a small shed tucked away in the corner of the paddock, while the latter will be a fairly large structure with numerous rooms, storage areas and amenities.

Timber stables intended for bedding down in will also need to take into consideration other factors, such as....
  • The stable should be designed to make evacuation of horses fast and painless in case of emergencies, like a fire or a bad storm.
  • Ensure that you have factored in high ceilings and broad throughways, with at least two large exit doors that swing open from the inside.
  • Another important detail to work into your timber stable are more general elements relating to the horses’ health and sanity -- they should be bright, airy and have good access to clean water.
  • Electronic lighting for the evenings would also be a good investment.
  • Storage rooms should be large, dry and air-tight, while easily accessible by the stables at large.
Step 3) Materials and Construction
Construction materials should, of course, be durable and strong. A horse, when bored or frustrated, may lash out with its hooves at the stalls. While no wood can last forever against iron-shod hooves and strong hind legs, stronger woods will allow the stables to last longer. Oak is a traditional building material for English-style timber stables. However stronger, heavier woods tend towards the expensive and not everyone can afford thick oak beams or panelling.

An important thing to consider is the possibilities of the wood splintering, try to line any wooden areas with ply, to further protect the horses. Concrete is a good all-purpose base for your foundation, although you should cover the floor with hay or wooden floor beams to help soften the ground for your horse’s hooves and legs. Hard floors may cause them injury.

Timber Stables Fire Safety

If you have stables, chances are they’re timber stables, unfortunately wood sets on fire easily. As such, if you want to avoid fires that could very easily have been avoided, it’s important to ensure that you and anyone else using your stables follow fire safety procedures very closely.

For reference, it takes about two minutes for a horse to die in a fire. You have about thirty seconds tops to get the horse out of the stables before the smoke starts searing its lungs.

So what can you do to prevent this sort of occurrence? The most basic thing you can do is just enforce some basic fire safety measures around your timber stables. No smoking. No open flames. Make sure hay is properly dry before storing it. Don’t leave hot objects lying around where it could ignite dry hay. Make sure wiring and other electronics are well maintained. Install fire alarms. The basics. Also make sure that everyone is familiar with the layout of your stables, and drill out a basic plan of action should your stables ever catch fire so that people know what to do and how to do it.

Another more integral thing can be undertaken to ensure that horses sheltering within your timber stables are more protected in the event of fire, and that’s to carefully plan out the overall lay out of the stables. For example, make sure that the spaces inside the stable are fairly spacious and airy, so that smoke doesn’t build up inside too quickly. That can buy you precious minutes to get the horses out of their stalls and out of the stables before they start suffering from smoke inhalation. A high ceiling also helps with this.

You should also design your stable doors so that they swing outwards, so as to make opening them easier during an emergency. Exists should also be placed on as many of the walls as possible to provide your horses (and any hands) plenty of avenues for escape. It also helps to space buildings a fair distance away from each other, say about 10ft-20ft apart, so that flames have a harder time spreading from building to building.

Every little helps, and there are dozens of other strategies and techniques you can use to protect your horses and property from fire. Doing all this can make your timber stables safer, and also protect your horses more effectively in the event of a fire.

Uses for Carriage Garages in the coming Spring

The British weather may not yet be improving but the evenings are getting lighter – a tell-tale sign for the new season. With Spring time comes the aptly named ‘spring clean’. A dedicated time to clean your homes from top to bottom, ditching the junk and giving every room that needed lift. Knowing what possessions should be thrown and which can be reused is often a difficult task – especially when it takes up valuable space within the home. A carriage garage could be just the answer to make the dreaded spring clean that little but easier.

A carriage garage outbuilding can be designed specifically to your requirements whether it be for storing large pieces of equipment or even making for a new office space to give more room within the home. These out houses can also be fitted with windows to make for a light and airy space. Well-built carriage garages use high specification materials including tantalised timbre, which offers protection from little critters and also fungal decay. The wood treatment offers extra protection for your possessions, making it as safe to store your articles outdoors as it would be within the home.

The roof should be lined with long lasting material to give added protection. Many roof lining materials can help create a cooler environment during the summer months and a warmer environment for the colder winter months, making for a more energy efficient outbuilding. Companies such as Jon Williams Stables are able to offer a number of ‘added extras’ based around your bespoke requirements including doors, with additional ‘backdoor’ options available to made the space for accessible.

If you are looking for ways to improve the space available in your home or are looking for that little bit of help when spring cleaning, please visit the website of JonWilliams Stables. Alternatively, if you would like to speak with a member of the team to discuss your specific requirements and what carriage garage may be best suited to you, please call 01380 850965 and a knowledgeable team member will be happy to help.

Portable Stables for Sale - Why This Should Interest Horse Owners

If you have a horse, it’s only basic practice that you have somewhere for it to sleep at night and shelter in during the wet or stormy weather. In fact, it’s required by law, and failure to stable your horses could result in them being taken into the custody of the RSPCA. This can be a problem if you did have a stable or some other form of shelter, but it’s collapsed or has been rendered uninhabitable. Stables are expensive and time consuming to build, during which time your horse may have to be stabled elsewhere while the shelter is rebuilt. Fortunately, there are often a large number of portable stables for sale throughout the country.

What are portable stables? The answer is in the name, silly. A portable stable is basically a temporary structure that can allow you to shelter your horse for a short time period, often when travelling or if a horse needs to be moved briefly to a new field, say because of flooding in the usual paddock.

Portable stables for sale should be of interest to you, because they allow you a quick and easy solution for shelter regarding your horses that are not always available. After all, sometimes you may not even have planning permission to construct a more permanent shelter in a certain field, so if a horse does need to be moved into it during an emergency you may have to wait for as long as several months before permission pushes through the right channels. During that time, your horse is dangerously exposed to the weather and other dangers. This in turn makes the horse unhappy, unhealthy and somewhat illegal.

Many portable stables are built from cheap, light-weight materials that are never the less durable. They have to be, after all, if they’re to contain horses. Their light frame means that transporting them is an easy matter of placing them onto a suitable frame for movement and then attaching that to a car. Perhaps not coincidentally this also makes it useful for providing shelter for your horses if ever they are to be taken long-distances, especially if renting a stable is difficult or expensive.

If you’d like to look at a wide range of portable stables for sale, or for further information regarding temporary, permanent or transportable shelters for horses and ponies, then you might want to consider Jon Williams Stables. Specialists with light-weight timber frame horse shelters, JonWilliams Stables is sure to have something to suit you. Get into contact by either visiting their website, or by phoning 01380 850 965.

Field Shelter for Sale in the UK

Field shelters for sale throughout the UK are on the rise. But why would I need a field shelter, you ask? If you don’t own a horse, pony or a similar kind of animal then you probably don’t, or at least not for the purpose it was intended for (they may make a nice place to store a quad though). However if you do own a lovely animal companion of the previous description, then you may find a field shelter very useful indeed.

What is a field shelter? It’s a simField Shelter for Saleple yet permanent wooden structure that can either be fixed into a concrete foundation, or else used with a handy-dandy foundation back to help keep it secured to the floor.

The primary use of such shelters is found more or less in the name, they’re shelters that you place on the field. Cheap and lightweight, they’re easy to assemble and cheap to purchase.

Field shelters tend to be fairly simple in their build, and are not really intended to serve as an alternative to stables. Rather, they’re more a place for animals to be sheltered during wet or stormy weather, or else as a temporary shelter while stables are being cleaned out or repaired. This makes them ideal for building up additional space to keep animals in, although that’s not all they can be used for.

Another use that people looking for field shelters for sale often find in such objects is for additional storage space. Field shelters are fairly large and spacious; as a result they make it ideal for storing large objects or objects that must be stored in large quantities. Things such as bales of hay, bags of feed, equipment for cleaning the stables and whatnot can be stored in field shelters where they will be kept safe and dry.

This is much easier and cheaper than forking out to pay for the construction of a new single-purpose barn or hayloft. Bear in mind that field shelters are permanent structures, and so will need planning permission before they can be built. Make sure that you have all the relevant paperwork before purchase.
